Washington, D.C. – President Joe Biden is facing increasing pressure from within his own party to abandon his re-election ambitions as a growing number of House Democrats express concerns over his ability to secure a victory in the 2024 race.
According to a report from the New York Post, President Biden may soon encounter heightened calls from Congressional Democrats to step aside.
At least 25 House Democrats are reportedly preparing to urge the 81-year-old president to end his re-election bid following a challenging debate against former President Donald Trump. Reuters cited a House Democratic aide who revealed that centrist House Democrats in competitive districts were alarmed by Biden’s performance during the debate. These lawmakers, fearing for their own re-election prospects, are considering drafting a letter to Biden.
The lawmakers’ concerns were intensified after returning to their districts for the House’s Fourth of July week recess, where constituents frequently questioned Biden’s capability to lead. “It looks like the dam has broken,” a second House Democratic aide told Reuters.
This development follows Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) becoming the first House Democrat to publicly call on Biden to step aside, citing the president’s shaky debate performance in which he repeatedly froze up and lost his train of thought. Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) have also expressed doubts about Biden’s ability to defeat Trump. Golden voiced his lack of confidence in Biden’s re-election prospects, while Gluesenkamp Perez told local outlet KATU, “The truth I think, is that Biden is going to lose to Trump.”
The increasing dissent among House Democrats highlights the growing anxiety within the party as they prepare for a potentially tumultuous election season.
