Two Killed in Violent Clash in Rivers State, Nigeria

Omuma, Rivers State – Two individuals, including a police officer and a member of the OSPAC local vigilance group, were fatally shot in Omuma Local Government Area on Monday amidst escalating political tensions.

The deaths reportedly occurred due to gunshot wounds sustained during a confrontation between supporters and opponents of Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the council headquarters. Although the state Police Command has yet to release an official statement, sources indicate the clash erupted as pro-Fubara youths defied security personnel to prevent the former council chairman from entering the premises.

Similar incidents of violence were reported across several local government areas, with protesting youths seeking to oust council chairmen whose terms expired on June 17, 2024.

In response to the unrest, Governor Siminalayi Fubara convened a high-level security council meeting on Tuesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital. The meeting, attended by heads of security agencies, addressed the deteriorating security situation and recent disturbances at local government offices.

Following the closed-door session, Governor Fubara briefed reporters, stating that the meeting aimed to develop effective strategies to prevent further invasions of local government facilities. He emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and ensuring the continuity of governmental functions across the state.

“It is crucial that we respect the rule of law and the democratic transitions that uphold our governance structures,” Fubara asserted, warning former council chairmen against attempting to unlawfully reclaim their positions.

The governor also raised concerns about an alleged plot by political adversaries to target and arrest his supporters. He pledged to protect all residents and their properties, stating, “Anyone attempting to make such arrests will have to confront me directly.”

As tensions continue to simmer, the state remains on high alert, with security agencies working to prevent further violence and restore order in affected areas.
