Lagos – A tragic accident occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos early this morning, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to three others. The accident involved a Mini Truck with registration number MUS 489 XS and a Toyota Camry with number plate KRD 470 JD.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speeding by the truck driver, who lost visibility due to the heavy downpour.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, reported, “Early this morning, Operatives of LASTMA responded swiftly to a serious accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, where one life was lost.”
Hon. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, confirmed the fatality. “One person died in the accident, which occurred near the University of Lagos waterfront, heading towards the Iyana-Oworonsoki area of the state,” Giwa stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that excessive speeding during the heavy rain caused the accident. Despite ongoing efforts to educate motorists about speed limits, many drivers continue to disregard the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
Giwa urged both commercial bus drivers and private car owners to avoid speeding, particularly on the Third Mainland Bridge and other roads throughout the state. He emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits to prevent such tragedies.
The deceased was promptly removed by SEHMU officials, and LASTMA cleared the accident vehicles to ensure a smooth flow of traffic on the bridge. Giwa extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the importance of road safety, urging motorists to refrain from speeding during any journey within or outside Lagos.
