Kano, June 21, 2024 – The Kano State Police Commissioner, Mr. Usaini Gumel, has provided an explanation for the police’s refusal to comply with Governor Abba Yusuf’s directive to evict the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nasarawa mini palace.
Commissioner Gumel explained that the state government, which issued the eviction order, had also filed a case regarding the matter at the State High Court, set to be heard on Monday, June 24, 2024. “The police will not evict the deposed Emir because the same government has filed a case at the State High Court on the eviction order, which would come up on Monday, 24th June 2024. So, if we carry out the order, it is like we are pre-empting the court because we don’t know what will happen at the court,” Gumel elaborated.
In the meantime, security has been intensified around the Nasarawa mini palace. A correspondent from Peaknews Online, who visited the location on Fridayreported an increased deployment of security personnel, with all four major routes leading to the mini palace blocked.
Despite the governor’s directive, the deposed Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, remains in the mini palace, accompanied by his palace guards and supporters. A supporter of Bayero, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the Emir was still receiving “traditional greetings” from loyal traditional rulers.
Addressing circulating rumors, the source dismissed claims that a bulldozer had been stationed at the palace in preparation for its demolition, labeling them as “social media propaganda.”
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the upcoming court hearing, which will likely determine the next steps in this ongoing saga.
Governor Yusuf, through the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, had instructed the police on Thursday night to remove the deposed Emir from his current residence. However, in a telephone interview with The Punch on Friday, the police commissioner stated that following the governor’s order would be “jumping the gun.”
